I love my garden... it's too bad that the gardening weather in Michigan, in January, is less than ideal. However, this January morning didn't stop me from doing a little bit of gardening. Last year I read about the concept of Wintersowing, and wanted to try it. Wintersowing is basically gardening in containers, putting them out in the winter, and letting nature do it's thing. For me, it's a little taste of gardening when there isn't anything going on in the garden, and it's too early to start indoor seeds.
The additional bonuses with Wintersowing is that it's really cheap to do. My tools: milk jugs, scissors, potting soil, tape, and seeds. For more info on how this works, you can visit http://wintersown.org/. If you go and look through their website, you can also send in a SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) and they will send you back a few packs of seed to try wintersowing, at no additional cost.
This year, I decided to wintersow Lupine, Hollyhocks, Rocket Larkspur, Window Box Roma tomato, Bells of Ireland, and Columbine. It'll be fun to see what grows in the spring. Right now, they are tied to the table outside. I look forward to seeing the tomato - it will look great in pots!
